Use Shopify or WordPress when they fit. When the workflow is rental, multi-location booking, or a checkout that is not a cart, custom software is usually cheaper than fighting the platform.

When a standard platform is the wrong tool

  • Inventory is time- and location-based (rentals), not simple SKUs
  • Checkout needs steps a theme cannot express
  • The catalog is a workflow, not a product grid
